A separate account involving M1073 (nicknamed Monkai) describes unexpected language-like output, but the published science concerns movement decoding, not speech.
A Chinese brain-computer-interface demonstration has shown how artificial intelligence can translate a macaque’s intended movement into robotic action, underscoring advances in neural decoding and the specialized animal research behind it.
In May 2026, the Nanjing Institute of Artificial Intelligence reported work involving Zhongke Yixiang and research partners. The experimental system identified a macaque’s intention to grasp an object in approximately 0.2 seconds, after which AI planned the movement of a robotic arm and dexterous hand. The task was completed in less than three seconds.
The technology could contribute to future assistive devices for people with impaired movement, although the demonstration was not a clinical application. Its reported achievement concerned movement intention, not language interpretation.
Developing such systems requires surgical expertise, equipment and access to suitable experimental animals. Jiangsu Lingkang Biotechnology announced cooperation with Zhongke Yixiang on large-animal surgical-navigation technology in September 2025. A September 11, 2026 Junction News report described preliminary discussions between Zhongke Yixiang and a Suzhou breeder about providing several macaques for research; no completed transfer was reported.
Demand has coincided with steep macaque prices. Yicai reported procurement figures rising from approximately RMB 92,000 per cynomolgus macaque in May 2025 to RMB 178,000 in June 2026, with some July quotations near RMB 200,000. Pharmaceutical testing remains the primary demand driver.
Against this documented background, a separate, unverified account describes unusual output from a neural-interface computer system at an unnamed research laboratory. A former caretaker said that short sequences of recognizable Mandarin words, and later English words, appeared during sessions involving a macaque designated M1073.
The caretaker did not operate the equipment and could not establish whether the display originated from neural activity, software processing or another component. Researchers reportedly reviewed records. M1073 became increasingly agitated and was later euthanized; the caretaker learned of the death on the next shift.
In a later interview, the former employee also relayed a researcher’s alleged reference to an attempted external-server transfer. No system logs were available to verify it.
Neither the reported words nor the server allegation establishes an extraordinary neural capability.
The unidentified facility has no established connection to the publicly named research projects.
